Review of The Defector’s Weld, W12, London

The Defector’s Weld, voted best bar in Shepherd’s Bush I’m proud to say they are also my local pub! I’ve spent many a Friday night (or even a cheeky cocktail on a Monday) in this fine establishment. But I thought it was about time that I tried out their grub.

Perched on the corner of Wood Lane, the clientele are a mixed bunch of media and creative types, young professionals, retired folk and neighbourhood locals who want to avoid the grotty and quite intimidating surrounding pubs.
The staff are always friendly and welcoming and I can I say handsome *AHEM*

Defector’s interior is dark with chocolate coloured flooring, tables and chairs giving it a cabin in the woods ambience.

 To the right of the bar is a roaring fire-place perfect to chill out in the corner on the most comfy sofas.

Further in are more tables and booths with an upstairs snug area available for private hire.

Greeted by the lovely Chris and his dashing moustache (in the pink below), my blogging contributor for the day Zoe scoured the menu for a lunchtime feast.

I was in the mood for a grease feast and opted for the W12 burger, homemade Hereford beef patty served with maris piper hand cut chips, a pickle and slaw. The burger was hearty, I should have asked to be cooked medium rare but still a very juicy, thick meaty patty. Bacon was crisp and salad fresh. The chips were a revelation, super tasty and lightly salted. The sweet pickle and slaw were a perfect accompaniment to the burger, if you like large portions then this is the dish for you!.

Zoe’s BLT meal deal was a great value for money, freshly prepared to order the sarnie was bursting at the seams with bacon which was crisp minus the oil, salad not wilted and the bread soft with crusts.

Gutted I couldn’t make a Sunday as their roasts sounds epic!

Defector’s has stuck to being a local pub and not tried to be like their upscale Soho or “trendy” Hoxton counterparts maintaining great meal deals and drinks offers at affordable prices. I would actually consider DW as a gastro pub;
1. Because it’s local
2. 100% cosy and comfortable
3. Fantastic food and drinks menu which has something for everyone.

Nightlife at the Defector’s is a different atmosphere; busy, bustling and bursting with hipsters and locals. DJ’s take residence every Thursday – Sunday nights playing all types of music and the place is always rammed to the brim of people.

Happy hour on cocktails runs from Monday – Saturday 5pm – 7pm and Sunday 5pm – closed. Bargain of buy one get the second for £1.

Velvet Underground was delicious!

The Defector’s Weld is a jewel amongst the rougher gems of Shepherds Bush. Sadly many pubs have closed in the area however Defector’s have stood proud rulers of the West. If you are looking for a quick drink or a lazy Sunday, DW is the perfect place, guaranteed friendly service, delicious food and welcome home atmosphere every time.
